Key takeaways

  • The Cronus Zen works on every PS5 model — original, Slim, Digital Edition, and Pro. The bypass procedure is identical on all of them.
  • What differs between models is the USB ports: newer PS5s lean on USB-C up front, so check which cable you need before setup night.
  • The Zen authenticates as a standard controller, so console revisions and system updates have not changed compatibility.

Every time Sony ships a new PS5 revision, my inbox fills with the same question: "does the Zen still work on the Slim / the Pro / the new digital one?" So let's settle it properly. Yes — the Cronus Zen works on every PS5 model. Original launch consoles, the Slim revisions, Digital Editions, and the PS5 Pro. The bypass is the same on all of them, scripts behave identically, and nothing about a console revision changes how the Zen operates.

What does differ between models is small but practical: the physical USB ports on the front of the console. That's most of what this guide covers, plus the exact bypass steps and when the Zen Link module makes sense.

Why Every PS5 Model Works

The Zen connects to the PS5 and presents itself as a standard controller. Once authenticated, the console has no further insight into what's upstream — your controller sits on the Zen's A1 port, scripts run on the Zen itself, and the PS5 just receives controller inputs. Sony revising the case, the internals, or the GPU doesn't touch any of that. This is also why system software updates haven't broken the Zen — the authentication model is the same across the whole PS5 family.

Port Differences by Model

The one thing to check before setup: which USB ports your console actually has, because the Zen's OUTPUT cable has to plug into one of them.

  • Original PS5 (2020) — one USB-A and one USB-C on the front; USB-A on the rear.
  • PS5 Slim (2023 revisions) — two USB-C ports on the front; USB-A on the rear.
  • PS5 Pro — USB-C up front, USB-A on the rear.

The Zen side is micro-USB, so your options are: a micro-USB to USB-A cable into a rear port, or a micro-USB to USB-C cable into the front. Both work. I prefer the rear USB-A ports for a permanent setup — the cable stays out of the way and front ports get bumped. Whichever you choose, it must be a data cable; the charge-only trap applies to USB-C leads just as much as micro-USB. See the cable guide before you buy adapters.

The Bypass — Identical on Every Model

PS5 requires an authentication step because Sony blocks most third-party devices by default. The procedure does not change between original, Slim, or Pro:

  1. On the PS5: Settings → Accessories → Controllers → Communication Method → Use USB Cable, and make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
  2. On the Zen: select an empty slot so no script is running — the OLED should read "No Gamepack Selected."
  3. Connect your controller to the Zen's A1 port with a data cable.
  4. Hold right on the D-pad and, while holding it, plug the OUTPUT cable into the PS5.
  5. Wait for authentication to complete, then cycle to your script slot.

If it fails, the causes are the same on every model: a script was running, the communication method setting is wrong, or one of the two cables in the chain is charge-only. The full troubleshooting flow is in the PS5 guide and the detailed bypass docs.

Zen Link on Slim and Pro

The Zen Link Wi-Fi module is the alternative to the manual bypass — it handles PS5 authentication automatically so you skip the D-pad ritual every session. It plugs into the Zen itself (one of the extra USB ports, A2/A3), not the console, so PS5 model differences don't affect it at all. If you play daily on any PS5 — Slim and Pro included — it's worth a look; I wrote a full breakdown in the Zen Link review.

Do Scripts Behave Differently on Pro?

No. Scripts run on the Zen, not the console, so a script behaves the same on a launch PS5 as on a Pro. The one thing worth knowing for timing-sensitive games: if the Pro runs a game at a higher or more stable framerate, in-game timing can feel different even though the script didn't change — the same way it feels different between performance and quality graphics modes. For NBA 2K26 players on Green, the timing model adapts rather than using fixed values, so this is handled; just re-run the generator if you change your setup significantly.

Quick Setup Checklist for a New PS5

  1. Confirm you have the right cable for your model's ports (data cable, always).
  2. Update Zen firmware first — 30 seconds via Zen Studio.
  3. Set communication method to USB Cable, Bluetooth on.
  4. Do the bypass with an empty slot selected.
  5. Switch to your script slot and play.
