Unboxing your Cronus Zen is exciting, but first-time setup can feel overwhelming. This guide walks you through everything from what's in the box to pairing with your console — whether you're on PlayStation 5 or Xbox.

What's in the box

Your Cronus Zen package typically includes the device itself, a USB-A to micro-USB cable, and sometimes an HDMI passthrough cable. The Zen is a small rectangular device — about the size of a deck of cards — with ports on both ends. You'll need the USB cable to connect it to your PC for initial setup and script installation.

Connecting to your PC

Plug the micro-USB end into the Cronus Zen and the USB-A end into your computer. The device should power on (you'll see status lights). On Windows, it may install drivers automatically; if prompted, allow the installation. Mac users can also connect — Zen Studio runs on both platforms.

Make sure you're using a data-capable USB cable, not a charge-only cable. Some cheap cables only support charging and won't let your PC communicate with the Zen.

Downloading Zen Studio

Zen Studio is the official software from Collective Minds. Head to the collectiveminds.com support page and download the latest Zen Studio for your OS. Install it, then launch the app. With your Cronus Zen connected, it should detect the device and show your current firmware version.

If Zen Studio doesn't see your device, try a different USB port (preferably USB 2.0), check that the cable is fully seated, and ensure no other Cronus software is running in the background.

Pairing with your console

For PS5: Connect your DualSense controller to the Zen via USB. The Zen sits between your controller and the console. You may need to use the USB passthrough method — connect the Zen to the console's USB port, then plug your controller into the Zen. Some setups use a separate USB hub. Follow the on-screen prompts in Zen Studio for the recommended connection method.

For Xbox Series X|S: Same idea — the Zen goes between your controller and the console. Use a wired Xbox controller or an official Xbox wireless adapter if you prefer wireless. The Zen will emulate an Xbox controller so the console recognizes it.

Testing that it works

Once connected, open Zen Studio and verify the device shows as connected. Load a simple script (or none) and flash it to the Zen. Then test in-game: move the sticks, press buttons, and confirm your controller inputs register correctly. If something feels off, double-check your cable connections and ensure your Zen firmware is up to date.

You're now ready to install scripts and customize your experience. Check out our guide on installing scripts for the next steps.
