Cronus Zen vs Cronus Max: What's the Difference?
If you're choosing between a Cronus Zen and an older Cronus Max, or you've found a used Max cheap and wonder if it's worth it — here's the straight comparison.
Hardware Differences
The Cronus Zen is the newer model with meaningful upgrades. It has built-in Bluetooth for wireless controller pairing; the Max requires a separate Bluetooth dongle. The Zen sports an OLED display that shows slot selection and status at a glance; the Max has a simpler LED indicator. Under the hood, the Zen uses a faster processor and more memory, allowing more complex scripts to run without lag. The Zen also offers nine script slots versus fewer on the Max.
Console Compatibility
This is the biggest practical difference. The Cronus Max does not support PS5 or Xbox Series X|S natively. It was designed for PS4, Xbox One, and older consoles. Workarounds exist (like Remote Play on PC or specific dongles), but they're clunky. The Cronus Zen supports PS5 and Xbox Series X|S out of the box with the appropriate setup (including the Remote Play dongle for PS5).
If you game on current-gen consoles, the Max is a non-starter. Get the Zen.
Cronus Zen V2
Cronus released a Zen V2 (sometimes called Zen 2) with refinements over the original Zen: improved build quality, better USB reliability, and firmware optimizations. It's the same platform — scripts and Zen Studio work identically. If you're buying new in 2026, the V2 is the one to get. The comparison below still holds: Zen (original or V2) vs Max — Zen wins in every meaningful way.
Price and Availability
The Cronus Max has been discontinued. You might find it used or in leftover stock, often cheaper than a new Zen. But given compatibility and feature gaps, that savings rarely makes sense. A new Cronus Zen (or Zen V2) typically runs around $90–100. A used Max at half that still can't do PS5 or Xbox Series without extra gear and hassle.
Which One to Buy in 2026?
Buy the Cronus Zen (or Zen V2). The Max is obsolete for modern consoles, lacks Bluetooth and the OLED screen, and won't see meaningful firmware or script support going forward. Unless you only play on PS4/Xbox One and found a Max for almost nothing, the Zen is the clear choice. It's the device cronusmax.com and script vendors focus on — your scripts, guides, and community support will all be built around the Zen from here on.
